First edition of a popular and comprehensive educational handbook, further editions followed in 1802 and 1806. It includes a section on double-entry bookkeeping, and chapters on English grammar and elocution, penmanship, arithmetic, stock-holding and merchants’ accounts, mensuration and architecture, optics, algebra, annuities, trigonometry, logarithms, geography, astronomy, mechanics, electricity, pneumatics, hydrostatics, hydraulics, drawing, engraving, and painting, “and other useful matter”. The plates include a very nice illustration of Herschel’s famous forty-foot telescope (plate 7) and three plates of electrical and pneumatical experiments and apparatus (19-21).

2 volumes, quarto (209 130 mm). Contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked to style, blue speckled edges. 26 engraved folding plates, 6 engraved maps. Book label to front pastedown. Some stripping to boards, corners a little rounded, occasional minor spotting, paper flaw in blank margin of leaves Q3 & 4 vol. 2. A very good set.
