Collected stories from the front lines of the First World War by medical corps private Alexander Woollcott, who had been a journalist and critic with the New York Times before volunteering for service war, and was one of a number of professional journalists selected by the American Expeditionary Forces to produce Stars and Stripes, a morale-boosting newspaper for the troops. The stories are accompanied by the illustrations of Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge, an illustrator who also contributed to Star and Stripes while serving on the front lines.
