First Goble edition, first impression. The deluxe limited edition, one of only 150 numbered copies. The Pentamerone was a seminal fairy-tale collection containing early forms of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty and Hansel and Gretel. It was originally written down from oral Italian sources by poet Giambattista Basile in the 17th century, and was the acknowledged source for Charles Perrault’s and the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale collections.

Quarto (280 215 mm). Recent two-tone blue morocco by the Cottage Bindery of Bath, spine gilt in compartments, boards gilt panelled, blue moiré silk endpapers, turn-ins and top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a grey cloth slipcase. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 31 plates on brown paper with printed tissue-guards. Spine faded. An excellent copy.
