The Hunting of the Snark
and Other Poems and Verses.
First Newell edition. American illustrator and children’s books author Peter Newell (1862–1924) began his career drawing for Harper’s Bazaar, Scribner’s Magazine and other publications. He went on to write several children’s books which experimented with the physicality of the book: Topsys and Turvys (1893) could be read upside-down as well right-side-up, The Hole Book (1908) followed the path of a bullet through the book’s covers and pages, The Slant Book (1910), shaped as a rhomboid, told the story of a baby travelling at great speed in his pram. Peter Newell also illustrated Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
