First edition. “Prichard (1825-74) served with the 15th Native Infantry in Rajputana. According to Malleson, he became disgusted with the military and left his regiment in 1858. Apparently he became a capable literary talent during his years in India” (Sorsky) Educated at Rugby, Prichard had previously seen action at Chillianwala and Gujerat, subsequently training as a barrister and practising in India, he was for a time editor of the Delhi Gazette. An uncommon account, just 9 copies on Copac.
Octavo. Original red pimple-grained cloth, title gilt to the spine, panels in blind to the boards, pale grey surface-paper endpapers. Slightly rubbed, the spine sunned, corners bumped, front endpapers slightly marked, light toning, contemporary ownership inscription of Theodosius Burnett Stuart to the front free endpaper, but overall a very well-preserved copy.
