CAMPERDOWN, Robert Adam Haldane Philips Duncan, 3rd Earl of.
First edition, uncommon. After more than a century this remains the standard biography of one of the great British naval heroes: “Duncan’s reputation for coolness, courage, and daring was well deserved… His care for his seamen earned their gratitude and affection, his courage and endurance their respect. One sailor wrote of him after Camperdown ‘They can’t make too much of him. He is heart of oak'” (ODNB). This copy with a familial presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: “Mrs M. E. Duncan from their son – J. M. Duncan, Easter 25/3/98”.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, black coated endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Admiral Duncan, 2 further photogravure portraits, plan of the action off Camperdown. Binding a little rubbed and shaken, touch of foxing to plates. A good copy.
