With a Preface by G. K. Chesterton.
First trade edition, first impression, one of 500 copies printed. Inscribed by the author in pencil on the front free endpaper, “To Miss Helen Hayes with best wishes from Duff Douglas Ainslie. University Club, Los Angeles, Upper High St”, and a subsequent owner’s note in ink at the top of the page, “Purchased from Helen Hayes – 63”. Grant Duff Douglas Ainslie (1865–1948) was a poet, critic, and diplomat who befriended Oscar Wilde and contributed to the Yellow Book. He was the first translator of the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce and also lectured on Hegel. The recipient, Helen Hayes, was an American actress whose career spanned nearly 80 years, from the silent era to the 1980s, and has been called “The First Lady of American Theatre”.
Duodecimo. Original marbled boards, printed paper label to spine. Spine faded and cracked with wear at the head and tail, some dampstain and spotting to endpapers, adhesive residue to lower edge of front endpapers, shallow abrasion to top edge of text block slightly affecting margins of contents. A very good copy, the marbled boards still quite bright.
