First US edition in English, uncommon, this translation first published as Guerrilla Warfare and EOKA’s struggle: a politico-military study (London 1964); issued first in the original Greek as Agon EOKA kai Antartopolemos (Athens 1964). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the half-title verso: “Freely given to: Frederic R. Smith, my Brother in Arms, sincerely George Grivas”. Grivas (1897-1974) led the EOKA guerilla campaign (1955-59) against British focres on Cyprus. The recipient may be Frederic R. Smith, a major in the Weapons Company of the 2nd Marines who fought at what is known as “Bloody Tarawa” (20-23 November 1943) where the 2nd Marines sustained particularly heavy losses and were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its “outstanding performance in combat”. Books inscribed by Grivas are rare.
