Look Back in Anger. A Play in Three Acts.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: “To Bethel Solomons, John Osborne”. Bethel Solomons (1885–1965), whose bookplate is on the front pastedown, was an Irish obstetrician and gynaecologist born to a prominent Jewish family. A gifted rugby player, he played internationally for Ireland. His father’s optician practice incidentally featured in James Joyce’s Ulysses: “Striding past Finn’s hotel Cashel Boyle O’Connor Fitzmaurice Tisdall Farrell stared through a fierce eyeglass across the carriages at the head of Mr M. E. Solomons in the window of the Austro-Hungarian viceconsulate”.
