First US edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “William Nicholson, from Maurice Baring 1934”, possibly to society painter and designer William Nicholson. Both Baring and Nicholson lived in the East Sussex village of Rottingdean in the first part of the twentieth century. From the library of historian and auctioneer Anthony Hobson, with his bookplate to front pastedown. Baring’s biography of the French actress was originally published in the UK the preceding year.

Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt on red ground, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece. Spine rolled and a little darkened, gilt dulled, endpapers lightly toned. An excellent copy in a slightly edge-chipped jacket with a few short closed tears.
