With the recipient Robert Laycock’s bookplate. Waugh had served as person assistant to Laycock during the defense of Crete in May and June 1941. Laycock and Waugh were on the last ship to leave the island, and Waugh would later incorporate their experiences into Officers and Gentlemen.
