Scott-King’s Modern Europe.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “Angie, with love from Evelyn, Christmas 1947”. The recipient was Angela Laycock, wife of Sir Robert Laycock, for whom Waugh had served as person assistant during the defense of Crete in May and June 1941. Laycock and Waugh were on the last ship to leave the island, and Waugh would later incorporate their experiences into Officers and Gentlemen.
