First edition, first impression, large paper issue. Inscribed by the author on the front blank, “John & Momo with love from Evelyn”. The recipients were Major-General John Charles Oakes Marriott and his wife, Maud, whose nickname was Momo. Waugh probably met them in the Middle East during the Second World War, as they were close to his friend Randolph Churchill, who may have had an affair with Maud in Cairo.

Tall octavo (255 160 mm). Late 20th-century grey quarter morocco by Asprey, grey cloth sides, titles to spine gilt, 5 raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spine tanned. An excellent copy.
