Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, “For Harry and Barbara, with love from Iris”, and additionally signed by Murdoch. The recipients were the artist Harry Weinberger and his wife Barbara Herrmann. Weinberger was a close friend of Iris Murdoch, who had painted her portrait. Murdoch wrote several catalogue introductions to his work, and found in his paintings a “charged, numinous atmosphere, the awkward mystery of space and the spiritual significance of colour”. Murdoch spent a portion of her Booker Prize on his paintings. This is the first Book Club edition; it was originally published the previous year by Chatto and Windus.

Octavo. Original green boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine rolled, faint spotting to edges; an excellent copy in the bright jacket.
