First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the inside cover of the box to the publisher, editor and literary agent William Miller, who was one of the main driving forces behind Panther Books: “For William, with respect for his courage in publishing this: and thanks, Bryan, 1/1/69” and with his signature over the printed title. The Unfortunates is an experimental novel-in-a-box, designed to be read in any order, as a way to mirror the inner workings of the mind of its protagonist, a football reporter trying to shut out traumatic memories reawakened by an assignment in the Midlands.

Octavo. 27 individual quires held together with a purple band, housed in the publisher’s pictorial box. Light foxing to initial and end leaves. Box lightly rubbed with discoloured spine. An excellent copy.
