DE LA MARE, Walter.
and other poems.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to “Harry & Margaret, with love from Jack. Christmas 921” on the front free endpaper. The recipients were Sir Henry Newbolt and his wife, a superb association: the “eager championship” of Sir Henry secured for De La Mare a royal bounty grant of £200 in 1908, a sum which allowed him to leave his job at Anglo-American Oil, where he had spent eighteen years in the statistics department, and devote himself to writing full-time (ODNB). De La Mare’s middle name was John and he was known to his friends as “Jack”.

Spine very gently rolled, label faded, corners slightly rubbed, free endpapers tanned, scattered light spotting. A very good copy.
