Under the Volcano.
First US edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “To my sister Priscilla with devotion from her brother Malcolm.” Former silent screen star Priscilla Bonner (1899–1996) was not Lowry’s sister by birth, but the elder sister of Lowry’s wife, Margerie, the dedicatee of the book and widely credited with shaping its final form. The book was published simultaneously in Britain and America: it “was poorly received in Britain and soon remaindered, but was hailed as a work of genius in North America, becoming a best-seller” (ODNB).
