First edition of this 19th-century dictionary of the Bible, which “marked a significant turning point in popular biblical interpretation” (ODNB).

3 volumes, octavo (225 x 145 mm). Late 19th-century black morocco prize binding, spines gilt in compartments with titles direct, flat bands, boards panelled in blind and with the arms of King’s College London to each front board in gilt, all edges gilt, yellow coated endpapers. Title vignettes, 6 plates and diagrams in the text. King’s College’s prize label dated 1882 to front pastedown of first volume, 20th-century ownership signature to front endpapers.
