A handsomely bound copy of the condensed version of Gleig’s life of the army officer and Governor of Madras Sir Thomas Munro (1761-1827), originally published in three volumes in 1830. “His government of Madras was very successful, based as it was on his thorough knowledge of the country and languages, his ability and principles, power of work and firmness. His death was universally deplored” (Buckland, Dictionary of Indian Biography, p. 307).
