An early typescript of a fundamental work on language. The author was inspired by the work of groundbreaking semanticist Alfred Korzybski, applying his theories to sociology and politics in reaction to the fascist use of language to oppress. Hayakawa was a lecturer at the Armour Institute of Technology in 1939 and this copy is likely from an edition produced for student use prior to the official publication in 1941. In 1949 the book was revised and retitled Language in Thought and Action, and it is now in its fifth printing.

Octavo. Original ring-bound typescript with blue covers printed in yellow. Ownership inscription to title page, pencilled underlining and notes throughout. Covers rubbed, contents a little toned. Very good condition.
