First separate edition, first printing. Signed limited edition, number V  of 20 copies only signed by both author and illustrator, from a printing of 1200 copies. Forster’s essay was first published in Horizon, December 1941, and largely incorporated in “Art for Art’s Sake” in Harper’s Magazine, August 1949.
Octavo, pp. 14. Original blue wrappers, front cover lettered in black. Tipped-in portrait frontispiece by Paul Cadmus, created for this edition. Wrappers lightly faded to edges, contents fine. An excellent copy.
