First edition, first impression, of Waugh’s macabre collection of short stories. The cloth binding, in the standard red-and-black snakeskin pattern used for Waugh’s novels in this period, was issued as a “Flexiback Binding” with extra reinforcement of rubberised linen tape at the inner hinges. Copies in jackets as nice as this one are uncommon.

Octavo. Original red and black decorated cloth, titles to spine gilt, inner hinges reinforced as issued. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece by Thomas Derrick. Bookplate to front free endpaper, printed profile of Waugh neatly tipped-in on the half-title, and his printed portrait tipped-in on the verso of the same leaf. Cloth fresh. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with toned spine panel and a few minor nicks and short splits at the folds.
