First edition, first impression. One of 500 copies printed. With the author’s signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, “Angie, with love from Evelyn, ‘I am not ‘I'”. The recipient was Angela Laycock, wife of Sir Robert Laycock, for whom Waugh had served as person assistant during the defense of Crete in May and June 1941. Laycock and Waugh were on the last ship to leave the island, and Waugh would later incorporate their experiences into Officers and Gentlemen.
