First edition, first impression, one of 3,150 copies, this the second state with the 32 page catalogue at the rear dated 11/02. Three lengthened stories or novellas including one of Conrad’s most regarded works, “Heart of Darkness” from which T. S. Eliot took the epigraph “Mistah Kurtz. He dead” for his “Hollow Men”. Described by Connolly in his Modern Movement as “a masterpiece of sinister deterioration seen by the narrator who is himself profoundly altered by it.”
Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, titles and floral decorations to front board in black. With the bookplate of Christian Head (later Cameron-Head) of Inverailort, the Highland estate, to front pastedown. Spine gently rolled, some foxing to edges and occasional foxing to contents; an excellent copy with bright boards.
