First one-volume edition, originally published in two volumes (1931-33) as The Sociology of Islam, this copy from the collection of American Islamicist Nicholas Heer, with his ownership inscription dated “Dhahran 1957”. Having completed his doctorate in Islamic mysticism at Princeton in 1955, Heer worked as a translator for Aramco at their Dhahran headquarters for two years before returning to the US to teach at Stanford. Levy (1891-1966) was Professor of Persian at the University of Cambridge.
