First edition, first impression of the author’s first novel, and the first in her 13-book cycle entitled Pilgrimage. Richardson was a clear precursor to James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, and it was to describe her work that the phrase “stream of consciousness” was first applied in a literary context, by May Sinclair in The Egoist.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered gilt, front board lettered black, publisher’s device to rear board in blind. Printed slip tipped-in to title page noting change of title, as issued. Spine rolled and faded, spine ends and tips slightly worn, endleaves mildly foxed, remnants of paper label to p. 1, not affecting text; a very good copy.
