First omnibus edition, first impression, comprising Tents of Israel (1924; published in the US as The Matriarch), A Deputy Was King (1926), and Mosaic (1930). The author Bertha Gladys Stern (1890–1973) wrote under the name G. B. Stern. She was known as Gladys as a child, later substituted Bronwen for Bertha, and was called Peter by her friends (but Tynx by Rebecca West). Her maternal grandfather was a Rakonitz, the name appropriated for the family in these “matriarch” novels.

Octavo. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black. With the dust jacket. Folding genealogical table. Spine rolled, extremities a little worn, very minor foxing to edges. An excellent copy in the bright jacket that has some nicks to extremities.
