(ELLINGTON, Duke) KIESER, Günther.
Norman Granz presents Concert with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.
Deutsches Museum, Kongreß-Saal [Munich], Sonntag 11 Oktober 1959, 20 Uhr.
First printing. Superb expressionist poster for a concert during Ellington’s hugely successful European tour of 1959. Following his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956, Ellington caught the attention of a new audience, and in ’59 he took a classic line-up, featuring Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, and the recently returned Johnny Hodges on tour, to rapturous responses. Günther Kieser (born 1930) is one of Germany’s pre-eminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including, the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the forefront of European poster art. Kieser is perhaps best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the design work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 1950-80s. His early collaborative atelier with typographer Hans Michel (1952-62) produced some truly remarkable work, graphically highly original, and imbued with a great sensitivity to the aesthetic of the artists being promoted.
