This powerful portrait of Miles Davis was designed exclusively for the Berlin Jazz Festival of 1971, an extraordinary international gathering of the era’s jazz luminaries, at which Miles’ new band, featuring Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz and Don Alias, was one of the headliners. Kieser’s design draws heavily on the psychedelic influences which he had been employing in his rock posters of the late 1960’s, and the portrait of Miles is considered to be one of his signature pieces in this genre. This image also featured strongly in the jubilee celebrations of the Berliner Festspiele, festival production manager Ihno von Hasselt describing the Jazzfest posters, for which Kieser was solely responsible up to 2000, as “street fighters. Hermetic depictions of signs which erected an entire defence system against the surrounding world of emblazoned dullness, sloppy inflated advertising and meaningless graphic design.” Gunther Kieser is one of Germany’s pre-eminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the forefront of European poster art. Kieser is perhaps best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 50s to the 80s, and for whom he effectively acted as in-house designer. A significant jazz poster by an important designer, and extremely uncommon, particularly in such sharp condition.

A0 format (1168 mm by 838 mm) vintage off-set lithographic poster. Design by Kieser, photography credit to Volker Hartmann. A touch of wear and several tiny closed tears to upper left and right margins, else about fine, bright, crisp and, very uncommon for a poster of this size, it has never been folded.
