First edition, first impression. Fremantle (1836-1929) “commanded the Eclipse during the Maori War (1864-7), and the paddle-steamer Barracouta during the Ashanti War (1873-4). In 1890 he led a punitive expedition against the Sultan of Vitu in British West Africa” (National Maritime Museum).

Octavo. Original navy blue cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover, top edges gilt. Photogravure portrait frontispiece. Very slight rumpling of cloth to spine, touch of foxing to fore-edge. A very good bright copy, with the 16-page publisher’s catalogue at the end (dated “9.04”). Jokingly inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Lieut Com Lebay (?) RNVR as a token of my esteem, Horatio Nelson”.

Bibliography: NMM, Biography, 587.
