First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “For Elizabeth from WSC”, and with the recipient’s bookplate on the front pastedown. Elizabeth Navarro was the long-time nurse, companion, and confidante to American financier, adviser to presidents, and philanthropist Bernard Baruch (1870–1965). Baruch was one of Churchill oldest and closest friends, the two having first met at the Paris peace talks in 1919. The book was originally published in the UK in 1947.
