First edition, deluxe issue, number 105 of 250 large-paper copies, also published in the United Kingdom sometime the same year under the title American Yachts and Yachting, the American edition with likely priority, and preferred on the basis of the author’s nationality. “Contains a history of American yachting from the early days of the New York Yacht Club to 1885 by Captain R. F. Coffin; the Mayflower and Galatea races of 1886, by Charles E. Clay; American steam yachting, by Edward S. Jaffray; and British yachting, by C. J. C. McAlister. The illustrations are line drawings of famous yachts, with captions telling about their owners” (Toy). Decidedly uncommon in the trade, with just one copy of the deluxe issue traced in auction records (in 1993), and four copies of the trade issue.

Large quarto (320 x 245 mm). Original white and blue two-tone cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, all edges red, floral-patterned endpapers. Frontispiece, some 110 line-drawings to the text, by Cozzens and others. From the collection of Michael Gilkes (1923-2014), ophthalmic surgeon and bibliophile, though unmarked as such. Mild scattered soiling to cloth, extremities lightly rubbed, spine darkened and a little nicked, a few small abrasions along board-edges, pale marking to frontispiece and title, with mild damping to frontispiece recto, else internally clean. A very good copy.

Bibliography: Morris and Howland p. 35; Toy 77 for the first UK edition.
