First edition. On hydraulics, the construction of hydraulic machines, and shipbuilding, illustrated with a fine set of technical illustrations, this work includes the general principles of the resistance of fluids, and of the mechanics of paddle-wheels and their application in mills and pumps. One chapter is devoted to the resistance of fluids against the hulls of ships, another to a machine of the author’s own invention for raising water, and the last chapter is on a new form of windmill. Ducrest was an officer in the navy and later in the army, and was chancellor to the duke of Orléans, to whom the book is dedicated.

Octavo (198 122 mm). Contemporary speckled half sheep, smooth spine gilt, red morocco label, blue mottled paper sides, red and blue sprinkled edges. 5 folding engraved plates. A little rubbing, an excellent copy.

Bibliography: Not in Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica.
