SHERRING, Charles A.
Western Tibet and the British Borderland.
The Sacred Country of Hindus and Buddhists. With an account of the government, religion and customs of its peoples. With a chapter by T. G. Longstaff describing an attempt to climb Gurla Mandhata.
First edition, first impression of “the most serious book on that region” (Yakushi) by a member of the Indian Civil Service and deputy commissioner of Almora. Sherring and Longstaff explored Garwhal and Ladakh together and Longstaff, with two alpine guides and six porters, made an attempt on Gurla Mandhata, which was foiled by an avalanche and other difficulties, and he turned back at 7,000 feet – then a world altitude record.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, pictorial gilt stamp on front cover. Photogravure frontispiece of Mount Kailash, many illustrations from photographs in the text, 2 large folding coloured maps of the region, 2 smaller maps in the text and a folding chart. Spine rolled otherwise an excellent copy.
