FALKNER, John Meade.
First London edition, uncommon, preceded by the rare Durham printing of c.1930 issued in brown wrappers. “The Poems in brown wrappers and the Poems in green wrappers present a problem. They are quite distinct editions, differently set up by different printers in different text types; but sufficiently alike for the format of one to have been copied from the other. There is no mystery about the green wrapper edition, of which 500 copies were printed for Mrs Meade Falkner in July 1933… the brown wrapper edition looks like a piece of provincial printing and contains several obvious misprints” (Pollard). From the library of Sir Henry Newbolt (1862-1938), poet and writer, inscribed in his hand at the head of the title: “Henry Newbolt. From [illegible, possibly “EV”: Falkner’s wife was called Evelyn Violet], July 1933″. Falkner (1858-1932) is, of course, best known as the author of Moonfleet (1898).
Small octavo. Original green wrappers, paper label on front cover, spine lettered by hand. Scattered foxing, some light scoring to fore-edge. A very good copy.
Bibliography: Pollard in The Book Collector Volume 9 No 3 (Autumn 1960), 10B (our copy varies in having vertical chain lines in the laid paper).Don't understand our descriptions? Try reading our Glossary
