TALBOT, William Henry Fox.
The Pencil of Nature.
New Introduction by Beaumont Newhall.
First facsimile edition. Originally published in six fascicles between 1844 and 1846, Talbot’s The Pencil of Nature outlines his investigations into the first practical negative-positive photographic process, the calotype process, and was intended to illustrate the versatility and potential of the this approach. However, due to the difficulties of large-scale photographic publishing at the time, “The Pencil of Nature, a bold effort ahead of its time that had drawn praise from contemporary critics, was discontinued after twenty-four prints in six fascicles had been issued”.
