First Edition of Ackermann’s lavish history of Oxford, complete with the Founders plate. The text is by William Combe, of Doctor Syntax fame.

2 volumes, quarto (342 × 282 mm). Publisher’s blue straight-grained morocco, spines lettered in gilt, gilt wide bands, compartments decorated in gilt and in blind, sides panelled in gilt and in blind, brown endpapers, gilt edges. 115 coloured plates, mostly aquatints, with portraits of Founders in line and stipple with aquatint backgrounds, and costume plates coloured line- and stipple-engraving. With list of subscribers, without half-titles. Offsetting from plates to text, one free endpaper replaced to style, a little rubbing, but a good set in publisher’s full morocco.
