First Edition. Monograph on the French Romantic sculptor. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1812, but unable to travel there because of the Wars. A great supporter of Napoleon, he went into exile on the Emperor's defeat in 1815. Returning to Paris in 1827 he soon regained his reputation and worked on a number of public monuments, the most famous of which is the panel, "Le Départ des Volontaires" on the Arc de Triomphe, better known as "La Marseillaise."

Quarto. (260 × 196mm.). Recent Havana morocco-backed marbled boards, marbled edges, original pictorial upper wrap bound in, in slipcase. Tissue-guarded photogravure portrait frontispiece and 9 other similar plates, numerous illustrations to the text, many full-page. A little browned, but overall very good.
