First edition, first impression. Edward Gordon Craig's copy, in his personal binding style, with his bookplate, and numerous pencil notes in his hand. Craig (1872–1966) was the son of actress Ellen Terry and himself an actor and director. He also trained as an engraver and was an influential set designer, introducing concepts such as stage lighting as part of his goal of integrating all aspects of a performance into a cohesive work of art. Craig lived in Italy for many years, and was inspired by the country's scenic grandeur. On page 273 of this volume he disagrees with the author, who writes of a particular castle, "…but so little is there of interest either outside or in, that for once we could not find wherewithal to employ our pencils…". Craig counters in the margin, "a little weak – for given any 10 yards of earth there is always enough to draw if one's [?] 'pencils' can find it out". A fabulous association copy.

Octavo (252 × 157 mm). Early 20th-century quarter vellum, titles to spine gilt, marbled sides. 2 maps and 20 plates. Map of Calabria pasted to front blank. Binding rubbed and tanned, spotting to contents, particularly plates. A very good copy.
