Second edition, revised and corrected, following the first of the same year. Uncommon biography of the engineer father of the great engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, written by their one-time assistant. The author served in the Coldstream Guards during the Napoleonic Wars, following which he trained as a civil engineer, qualifying in 1826 and becoming a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1829. He worked with Marc Isambard Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel on the Thames Tunnel, and later on the Forest of Dean Railway. Contemporary bookplate of Thomas Lee and Mary A.B. French to the front pastedown, later bookplate of Sir Humphrey Noble, son of Sir Saxton Noble and his wife Celia who was Isambard Kingdom Brunel's grand-daughter, to the front free endpaper. A family copy.
Octavo. Neatly recased in the original green pimple-grained, blind-stamped cloth, title gilt to the spine, pale yellow surface-paper endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece and 8 other plates, 7 illustrations to the text, 2 of the full-page. A little rubbed at the extremities, light toning to the text, but a very good copy.
