On its first publication in May 1849, The Seven Lamps of Architecture was the first of Ruskin's works to carry his name, and the first to be illustrated. It was to prove a key work in the Gothic revival, notably encouraging the use of Gothic in secular buildings. Ruskin's intervention was theoretical more than practical: the "lamps" of architecture were moral categories – sacrifice, truth, power, beauty, life, memory, and obedience – abstract notions in themselves, but which for Ruskin were manifested in particular Gothic buildings in Italy and northern France.

Folio. Original blue-grey printed boards, printed spine label, edges uncut and partly unopened. Protected in a good quality tan morocco-backed folding case, spine lettered gilt. 14 tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates by Ruskin.
