First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the book's designer and typographer Paul Rand on the front free endpaper, "for Milt & Ciel Xmas 1951, Paul". Paul Rand (1914–1996) and Milton Glaser (1929– ) were two of the most significant graphic designers of the twentieth century. Rand was an early proponent of the Swiss style, which emphasised clean lines and readability, and he designed well-known corporate logos, including those of IBM, UPS, ABC, and Enron. Glaser has worked in a variety of styles and formats, and is best known for his 1967 Bob Dylan poster and the I Love NY logo. A superb association.

Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and upper board in white and black. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout. Cloth rubbed, wear to corners and ends of spine, spine and edges of boards tanned, joints starting, endpapers tanned. A very good copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with tanned spine panel and a short closed tear at the base of the spine panel.
