"This volume, the results of the author's efforts to form a compilation of facts concerning the native races, is regarded as one of the best in the subject The Geography, government, laws, and customs of the natives are fully described, and the mass of information thus presented is extremely useful to students of the habits of the aborigines of South Africa" (Mendelssohn). John Maclean was chief commissioner of the colony from October 1852 to March 1860, and the territory's first, and only, lieutenant-governor March 1860 to December 1864. This copy inscribed "P.B. Roe, 60th Rifles from Colonel Maclean, C.B. " on the upper wrap, and "P.B. Roe from Colonel Maclean C.B., Chief Commissioner, British Kaffraria" on the title page. Peter Burton Roe, later colonel commandant of his regiment, was commanding the 60th Rifles in South Africa.
Octavo (202 × 129 mm). Recent half morocco, marbled boards, red morocco spine labels, original plain green paper wraps bound in . 3 folding tables, tables to the text. Upper wraps a little damp-spotted, slight smudging of the inscription, somewhat browned, but overall very good.
