First edition, inscribed by the author in volume 3, "Wendy [Russell] from Winston S. Churchill October 1957". Wendy Russell (1916–2007) was the American long-term companion and later wife of Winston Churchill's literary agent, Emery Reves, who arranged worldwide publication of Churchill's speeches and was instrumental in the publication of The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. La Pausa, their villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, which had been built for Coco Chanel by the Duke of Westminster, was made available to Churchill as a retreat in the 1950s, where he corrected proofs of the present work. This volume of the four-part work would have been particularly suitable as a gift to Wendy, as it covers the events surrounding American Independence.

4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered gilt, in the printed dust jackets. Near fine set.
