First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Carl Snyder from his friend E. W. April 1909". Snyder was an oceanographer whom Wharton knew in Lenox, MA shortly after her affair with Morton Fullerton (Lewis, Edith Wharton).
Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and decoration to spine and upper board gilt, top edge gilt. Bookplate of author and historian Louis Auchincloss. Cloth lightly rubbed with small worn areas to the corners and ends of spine, spotting to endpapers. An excellent copy.
