CHURCHILL, Winston S.
Autograph letter signed to Philip Morrell declining to electioneer on his behalf at South Oxfordshire.
Dated 22 June 1904, on 105 Mount Street stationery. Churchill elegantly declines to appear in support of his Liberal colleague Morrell, as the Tory candidate Sir Robert Hermon Hodge "is a personal friend, & spoke several times in my support at a by-election I once fought in Lancashire. He is a brother officer of mine in the Yeomanry & I do not feel that I could with any good heart attack his candidature... I'm sure you will understand my difficulty." Morrell finally succeeded in winning the seat in 1906. Churchill tackles one of the minor difficulties arising from his crossing of the floor of the House.
Two pages, 203 × 125 mm. Recto and verso of the first leaf of a bifolium. Rust marks from a paper-clip to verso of first leaf and both sides of second leaf, light crease from old fold, otherwise very good indeed. Together with the original envelope, lacking the flap, addressed in Churchill's hand and initialled by him at the lower right-hand corner. Both items docketed "Mr. Winston Chruchill" by Morell.
