BRYANT, Arthur.
Autograph manuscript, "The Summer of Dunkirk."
The original working manuscript of Bryant's celebrated article commissioned by The Daily Sketch and published in that newspaper on 3 and 4 June 1943, the third anniversary of the Dunkirk withdrawal. There are many substantive deletions, additions and corrections on every page. The populist historian Bryant (18991985) himself was responsible for the presentation binding of this work and on an early binder's blank is the following inscription, "For Lord Kemsley [proprietor of The Daily Sketch] who uses his wealth as a trust for his country from the author".
Folio, 24 leaves, written in pencil on rectos only. Contemporary presentation binding by Birdsall in full red crushed morocco, titles to upper board gilt, two raised bands to spine, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Fine.
