First edition first printing. From a total edition of just 120 copies this is number XVIII of 18 copies numbered in Roman numerals and reserved for the author. With Stein's signed presentation inscription to the limitation leaf, "To Francis Rose from Gertrude Stein". Francis Rose (1909-1979) was an English painter of whom Stein was admirer, patron and subject. His work was used as illustrations to later collections of Stein's work. It has been suggested that Stein's famous quote, "A rose is a rose is a rose," alludes to Francis rather than the flower.

Small folio. Original grey wrappers printed in black. With the original unprinted glassine. Housed in a black quarter morocco slipcase with chemise. Stitching loose but a superb copy.
