SEWELL, A[nna].
Black Beauty: his grooms and companions. The autobiography of a horse.
Translated from the equine
First edition, presentation copy from the author's mother, inscribed by her on the front free endpaper: "Mary Sewell, To her good friend Mr Bull In Memory of the Author". As the book's bedridden author died only a few months after publication, a high proportion of presentation copies were inscribed by her mother, the writer Mary Sewell (17971884), who had taken dictation and transcribed the novel. This copy is in the most frequently seen binding, Carter's C.
Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and upper board lettered and decorated in black and gilt, lower board decorated in black, brown endpapers (Carter's C binding, with the central medallion on the front cover showing a horse's head facing left). Frontispiece, 8pp. undated publisher's adverts at end. Extremities a little worn, unobtrusive restoration to inner hinges, traces of old clipping removed from front free endpaper, occasional very light spotting, a good copy of a book that is very rarely found in fine condition.
