First edition, presentation copy, with Blackmore's autograph presentation inscription to the front free endpaper of volume I: "To Archdeacon Sanders, with many grateful memories. Decr 1881", in Blackmore's hand but unsigned, as was his habit with presentation copies. Sanders, Archdeacon of Exeter Cathedral, could have been remembered with gratitude for his part in Blackmore's education. After an old-fashioned grammar school education at Blundell's School, Tiverton, Blackmore gained a school scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford.

3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, covers with publisher's devices in blind, titles to spines gilt, cream coated endpapers. Housed in an early 20th-century morocco-backed bookform slipcase, lettered in gilt. Some hinges starting, spines very lightly cocked, a couple of signatures in volume III a trifle proud, cloth very lightly marked, still an excellent set of a scarce book.
